LED headlights are available in 4 colors
Improved manufacturing processes, improved technology, and wider use have made LED lights more affordable and accessible while providing much better results than halogen lights. As a result, they are also safer because they can produce more light with less energy consumption and are easier to see during the day and at night.
In addition, it has become easier to install LED conversion kits to replace regular halogen bulbs on more car models than ever before. Some people do it purely for beauty, but for others, it’s more a matter of being able to take advantage of all the benefits a brighter, more efficient, and safer light can provide.
LED headlights are available in 4 colors. The color temperatures of LED bulbs are measured on the Kelvin scale. Below are the four-color temperatures with their Kelvin scale rating:
- Warm White – WW 2700-3200 Kelvin.
- Natural White – NW 4000-4500 Kelvin
- Daylight white – NW 5000-5500 Kelvin
- Cool White – NW 6500-7500 Kelvin
(Warmer LEDs have yellow tones, while cooler LEDs have blue tones)
How does an LED Bulb work?
LED lights work by passing an electrical current through a semiconductor or diode; LED stands for “light-emitting diode. They differ from both halogen and xenon lights in that both of these types of bulbs use gases inside the bulb to increase brightness and lighting efficiency. Both halogen and xenon bulbs also use an incandescent filament that glows when heated.
LEDs are a more expensive alternative to both halogen and xenon bulbs, but they are better at almost everything. They burn longer, use less energy and give a whiter light. More and more car manufacturers are equipping them as standard equipment for their lineups, although halogen headlights are still widely used because of their low cost.
LED Headlight Buyer’s Guide
Whether you are replacing old headlights or upgrading your car’s headlights, you need to figure out which one will be best for you. Below are the most important factors you should consider before choosing one.
The main things to consider when buying LED headlights:
Color
Experts advise you to buy LED headlights that have a temperature of 5000 Kelvin and above, as they are considered the safest headlights due to their bright road illumination. Such headlights have a Daylight White color, which can give you the widest and farthest light.
Avoid the yellowish-warm colors of LED headlights because they are not the brightest.
Lumens or light output.
Light intensity or output is measured in lumens. A brightness of 6,000 lumens is usually the lowest wattage you can get for available headlights. Ultra-bright options can adequately illuminate a straight line of more than 500 meters.
LED headlights with 8,000 lumens output are powerful and illuminate within 700m of a straight line.
LED headlights with 10,000 lumens to provide the same daytime illumination, which can make nighttime driving much more comfortable and safe.
Life expectancy
Compared to most LED headlights available on the market, which have a life expectancy of 6,000 hours (halogen lamps) and 30,000 hours, LED headlights have the longest life expectancy of over 50,000 hours due to the use of both cooling fans and a cooling chip.
Warranty
The warranty period varies from one manufacturer to another. You may find that manufacturers often provide warranties of 2 or 3 years. Warranties are important because they protect your purchase and show the brand’s confidence in their products.
It would be better if you purchased LED headlights with a three-year warranty because they provide more peace of mind. Often brands will offer free technical support as part of their after-sales services, which can be extremely helpful if you have any questions about the product and its use.
Cooling methods
Like most bulbs, LED headlights also generate heat, which needs to be reduced because it shortens the life of the headlights. Built-in cooling systems keep the headlights from overheating. Therefore, you need to choose LED headlights with an efficient cooling system.
Basically, there are two types of cooling technology for LED bulbs:
- Radiator – Headlights with radiator cooling technology, also known as fanless LEDs, have a passive cooling mechanism that dissipates heat without the need for an external cooling system. Instead, they rely on natural elements, such as wind, to cool the headlights. LEDs with a heat sink have a longer life, produce minimal noise, and are more energy-efficient and cost-effective. All of these advantages provide superior lighting performance.
- Fan-driven LED headlights with a built-in fan cooling mechanism to use the fan as an active cooling mechanism. The fan is an external cooling source, and there is a thin fan inside the headlight assembly that quickly dissipates heat. Since most of these LEDs come with a compact fan.
The biggest drawback to this method of cooling is that the fan consumes extra power and creates noise. It also requires more maintenance than LED headlights with a radiator.
Reasons to upgrade your headlights
Better lighting is much more than just a crisp and beautiful ride. Here are a few reasons why people upgrade their car’s headlights:
- The car’s original headlights were substandard factory bulbs that weren’t very bright.
- The beams became uneven and wobbly due to heavy impact and excessive off-road driving.
- The new bulbs are reasonably priced and last a long time for maximum value.
- LED and discharge lights are better than halogen lights and make it easier to see other vehicles and the road at night.
- New headlights mean less strain on the eyes because the clear, crisp beams produce even beams that don’t force the human eye to work as hard to see the road and other vehicles.
- Replacing headlights is a relatively simple do-it-yourself project, meaning you don’t have to be a “motorist.”
- A new pair of headlights will beautify any car, no matter how old it is.
When is it best to change headlights?
Always ask your mechanic to check your headlights when you service your car. This is one way to stay on top of your situation. Also, if you ever notice dimming or “fluttering” of the beams, get new bulbs as soon as possible. Don’t drive in the dark if you suspect your headlights are out of order.
Always replace bulbs in pairs so that the beams are equally tuned in direction and strength.
Don’t skimp when your safety is on the line! If you have separate high and low beam headlights on each side, replace all four when one fails.
Headlights are an important piece of equipment to keep your car safe and are just as important to your health as airbags, brakes and all the other potentially life-saving features you rely on every time you get behind the wheel and sit behind the wheel.
