BMW X1 9 Generation (2021)
There are no significant changes this year.
BMW X1 8 Generation (2020)
Although the exterior has received an update for 2020, not much has changed inside this year, except for some new contrasting stitching on the seats and faux leather surfaces. As before, the interior is adorned with beautiful glossy wood paneling and leather trim. A few cheap spots stand out, like the hard plastic on the door, but overall it gives the impression of quality.
BMW X1 7 Generation (2019)
New standard active safety features include low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and forward collision warning with daytime pedestrian detection. Other new standard features include front and rear parking sensors, navigation, and subscription-based Apple CarPlay smartphone connectivity with a free one-year trial.
BMW X1 6 Generation (2018)
The X1 now has a standard backup camera.
BMW X1 5 Generation (2017)
For 2017, the BMW X1 is available as a more affordable front-wheel-drive sDrive28i, and the M suspension is now part of the M Sport Package rather than standard.
BMW X1 4 Generation (2016)
The standard audio system includes a 6.5-inch multimedia screen and BMW iDrive controller. Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, HD radio, USB input, and steering wheel audio controls are also standard. A basic navigation system, satellite radio, and a premium audio system with Harman Kardon surround sound are optional. A technology package with navigation and a larger screen (8.8 inches) is optional; it also adds a touchpad to the iDrive controller, so you can draw letters or numbers, a feature I haven’t used much in other cars.
BMW X1 3 Generation (2015)
There are no significant changes.
BMW X1 2 Generation (2014)
For the 2014 model year, the BMW Assist communication system is now standard; this feature includes automatic collision notification and comes with a 10-year subscription. In addition, the optional M Sport Package now includes coral-red leather with contrasting piping.
BMW X1 1 Generation (2013)
Despite the pint-size, the 2013 BMW X1 has great fuel economy and affordability, while maintaining BMW’s characteristic driving fun and luxury. Compared to other BMW SUVs, including the X3, X5, and X6, the X1’s low ground clearance, easy entry, and small rear seat space are more like what a hatchback or station wagon offers.
